Who’s for a holiday in May?

Here’s why taking a Norfolk Broads holiday in May can be a fantastic choice

1. Pleasant weather: The weather in May is often mild and pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 12°C to 17°C. This weather is perfect for enjoying the beauty of the Norfolk Broads without it being too hot or too cold.

2. Beautiful scenery: The Norfolk Broads is a unique wetland area in the UK with over 125 miles of navigable waterways, picturesque landscapes, and diverse wildlife. In May, the scenery is even more stunning, with fresh green foliage, blooming wildflowers, and birdlife in abundance.

3. Fewer crowds: May is still considered a low season for tourism in the Norfolk Broads, which means you can enjoy the peace and quiet of this tranquil location. You can explore the Broads at your leisure and avoid the summer crowds.

4. Local events: In May, the Norfolk Broads hosts various events and festivals, such as the Broads Outdoor Festival, which offers a range of outdoor activities and guided tours, and the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, which celebrates music, arts, and culture. .

To give you an idea of what's available, and at what prices, I've selected 12 boats through The Early May Day, Kings Jubilee and Spring Bank holidays. As usual, these are just a small selection. You can see the full range of availability by using the Bank Holiday search tool below.

Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Ludham

The moorings at Ludham

Ludham, not to be confused with Ludham Bridge situated on the River Ant, is a pretty picture postcard village to be found at the head of Womack Water, a broad which is connected to the River Thurne by a fairly narrow dyke. Moorings can be found at the furthest point from where you enter the broad in the form of a local authority staithe. There is room for around 14 to 16 boats moored stern on to the quayside. Water and waste disposal facilities are available nearby. There is a fee of £3.00 per boat payable for overnight stays. Though moorings are relatively plentiful here it should be noted that due to their picturesque setting, they are very popular and tend to fill up by around 3-4pm most afternoons. Unless you have a plan B it would be wise to arrive no later than mid-afternoon if you intend staying overnight. The village lies around 10 to 15 minutes from the staithe and is a pleasant walk down country lanes and thatched cottages .

Local Attractions: The village has 1000 years of history and has many thatched cottages and other historic buildings. St. Catherine's Church is very special with its rare painted Rood Screen and is well worth a visit. Many local walks are suggested in a pamphlet available from Throwers stores.

Eating and Drinking: Kings Arms- Restaurant and bar food. Regular live music at weekends. Tea Room - both in the village centre.

Other Services: Throwers Stores, a small supermarket and a butchers and a doctors surgery can be found in the village centre. Public toilets and refuse disposal are available at the staithe.

TIP: The Kings Arms public house gets very busy as it serves both the village and the many chalet hirers in Potter Heigham. If you are eating out, it would be advisable to book a table here. If visiting during the evening, a torch is a must as the route back to the staithe is mostly unlit.
