2 Broadlander class boats at Ludham Bridge

January 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to our first newsletter of the New Year, in which we hope to keep you up to date with what's happening in Broadland, and point you towards discounts, deals and booking trends. Reservations for 2023 (and 2024), have been open for some months now and in general, there is still good availability. The exception to that is any weekend that includes a public holiday, where availability is a little tighter.

To make it easier to find a break at these times, I've set up an availability tool dedicated to the Easter, Early May, Coronation Day (yes, we get an extra bank holiday on the 8th May) and Spring Bank holidays. You will find it a little further down. Below are some examples of what's available for Easter and Spring Bank to get you thinking of holidays afloat.

Boats for larger parties are now scarce

Richardsons decommissioned over 30 hire cruisers that were attractive to larger parties last year. As such there are now just 17 boats capable of accommodating parties of 9 or more people.

If you're wanting to get the family together on a boating holiday, or are planning a stag or hen do, please consider booking sooner rather than later, as demand is likely to outstrip availability this summer. For a full list of which cruisers accommodate 9 or more people, please click the button.

Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Cantley

Oveerlooking the village of Cantley

The sugar factory which dominates Cantley, can be seen from miles around. Despite its industrial look, Cantley is not plagued by foul smells or besieged by noisy lorries from dusk till dawn. The factory is one of four in the UK built to process the sugar beet which is harvested in the winter months. At this time the factory can be seen illuminated against the night sky with plumes of smoke emanating from its chimneys. The rest of the year is given over to maintenance of the plant.

Things to do: Cantley railway station is just a hundred yards from the Reedcutters Inn which makes it a good stopping off point to take the train into Norwich or down to Great Yarmouth. As both these destinations charge fees for overnight moorings the train can be a convenient and fast alternative to the trek up or down river. A walk around the Cantley area has been put together by the Wherry Line which takes in the sugar factory, the ruins of St Edmunds church and Cantley Marshes where you can come across wildfowl, waders and raptors. The walk is 4.7 miles in distance and directions can be downloaded HERE. Look for the "Cantley 4.7 mile walk" link.

Eating and Drinking: The Reedcutters can be seen on the left riverside as you approach the village of Cantley if coming from further upstream. Coming from the Yarmouth side you will encounter the Inn once you have passed by the sugar factory. There are ample moorings either outside the Reedcutters or on the adjacent Broads Authority moorings. Both are without charge. The Reedcutters offers a varied menu of home cooked food, served either in the bar area or in the adjoining restaurant.

TIP: Allow a little slack on your ropes when mooring as you start to feel the difference a rising and falling tide makes here.
