 November 2022 Newsletter
Summer School Holidays 2023

The boating season is all but over, and the boatyards are now starting the long winter task of repairing, refurbishing and preparing their cruisers for next year. Most boats will be out of the water at some stage to be worked on, which is why the season closes at the end of October (in most cases). But next season starts again around mid February in time for the Half Term break. In between, people will still be planning and booking their 2023 summer holidays. If you book it - you have something to look forward to! So the focus of this month's newsletter, is the 2023 Summer School Holidays. There's still a good choice of cruisers to choose from, but that will change come January, when the booking season gets underway. With that in mind, I've highlighted some deals you can get now, though these are but a small selection only. The blue button further down will take you to our holiday search page, to check the dates and durations that suit your circumstances.

Boating holidays on sale for 2023

The White Heron in Brundall

You probably know it as The Yare, situated close to the level crossing in Brundall. The place closed last year as a going concern, but has subsequently been purchased by the Broom Boats people and has now just reopened after an extensive redevelopment programme. At the time of writing, it offers drinks only, though it's restaurant business is expected to be up and running before Christmas.

Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Horsey Mere

Burgh Castle

Horsey Mere is actually a Broad. It is reached by passing under Potter Heigham Bridge. So a low draft boat, usually ones where the cabin is all the same height and driven from the front, or centre cockpit boats where the wheelhouse sides drop down would be needed and is a consideration when booking your holiday. Alternatively, you could moor at Potter Heigham, and hire a day boat from one of the local boatyards, to explore the 5 miles or so of extended waterways beyond the bridge.  At the far end is a narrow dyke which provides moorings for a small fee for the area.

Local Attractions: You are in unspoilt Broads territory here so the countryside and wildlife figure highly. Horsey Mill is open for viewing and provides good views from its "viewing platform". The walk to the beach at Horsey Gap can be particularly rewarding as often seals can be seen basking on the shore. The walk is around one mile long. Ross’s Wildlife Boat trips is a cruise which starts from the Horsey moorings. You might wonder why you would want to step on a boat when you have one yourself. However, the tour is well regarded as it will take you to hidden areas of the Broad where you will discover wildlife in it’s own unspoilt habitat. The cruise is one hour long and conducted by the knowledgeable staff, who are passionate about the area. Pre-booking is advisable. More details can be found HERE.

Eating and Drinking: Though the area is remote it still has it’s own public house, The Nelson's Head. The bar offers an extensive menu and makes a good before or after stop on the way to Horsey Gap. Other Services: At the end of the dyke is a small cafe and shop selling provisions.

TIP: You are advised to arrive early should you wish to moor here due to the popularity of the area. You will be approached on arrival to settle the mooring fee which is currently £5 for an overnight stay.
