It's cheaper now the kids are back at school!

Mid to late September can be a wonderful time to get afloat on the Norfolk Broads. While the days may have an autumnal feel, there are often plenty of bright and sunny, pleasant days to enjoy the waterways and the beautiful Norfolk countryside.

By this time of year, the main summer crowds have disappeared, making the Broads feel considerably more peaceful. With fewer boats around, you’ll generally find it easier to secure a good mooring, and popular riverside pubs, villages and attractions can be enjoyed at a much more relaxed pace. There’s also something rather special about the Broads as summer gives way to autumn. The changing colours, misty mornings and quieter waterways create a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere, while there is still plenty of daylight to explore. You can spend your days cruising between picturesque villages, stopping for lunch at a waterside pub, or simply finding a peaceful mooring and enjoying the scenery.

And perhaps best of all, the cost of hiring a boat in September can be up to half what you might pay during the peak summer season. That means you could enjoy a full boating holiday for considerably less, while avoiding the busiest time of year. Norfolk Broads Villages - Ludham

Ludham, not to be confused with Ludham Bridge situated on the River Ant, is a pretty picture postcard village to be found at the head of Womack Water, a broad which is connected to the River Thurne by a fairly narrow dyke. Moorings can be found at the furthest point from where you enter the broad in the form of a local authority staithe. There is room for around 14 to 16 boats moored stern onto the quayside. Water and waste disposal facilities are available nearby. There is a fee of £5.00 per boat payable for overnight stays. Though moorings are relatively plentiful here it should be noted that due to their picturesque setting, they are very popular and tend to fill up by around 3-4 pm most afternoons. Unless you have a plan B it would be wise to arrive no later than mid-afternoon if you intend to stay overnight. The village lies around 10 to 15 minutes from the staithe and is a pleasant walk down country lanes and thatched cottages .

Local Attractions: The village has 1000 years of history and has many thatched cottages and other historic buildings. St. Catherine's Church is very special with its rare painted Rood Screen and is well worth a visit. Many local walks are suggested in a pamphlet available from Throwers stores.

Eating and Drinking: Kings Arms- restaurant and bar food. Regular live music at weekends. Alfresco Tea Rooms - both in the village centre.

Other Services: The Big Shop, a convenience store, can be found at the head of the moorings. Throwers Stores, a small supermarket, a butcher, and a doctor's surgery can be found in the village centre. Public toilets and refuse disposal are available at the staithe.

TIP: The Kings Arms public house gets very busy as it serves both the village and the many chalet hirers in Potter Heigham. If you are eating out, it would be advisable to book a table here. If visiting during the evening, a torch is a must as the route back to the staithe is mostly unlit.
