Norfolk Broads Towns and Villages - Geldeston Map

At the very navigable head of the River Waveney, lies the tiny village of Geldeston. Moorings are available free of charge for hire craft in two locations. You can moor on the dyke which leads up to Rowancraft’s boatyard. These are closest to the village centre and the Wherry Inn. Alternatively, moorings are available for up to five visiting craft on the dyke which leads up to the Locks Inn. Geldeston is a sleepy village with no shops but two public houses.

Local Attractions: A visit to the Locks Inn is a must as it is unique in that it still has no electric lighting in the bar area and is candle-lit by night. The Inn is actually a large concern and has regular afternoon and evening entertainment on the lawns in front of the building. The old disused locks are nearby and also worth a visit. A walk from Geldeston to nearby Beccles is worthwhile as it borders the Waveney river all the way. You can avoid the walk back by taking the regular Big Dog ferry service which takes around 40 minutes and starts from Beccles Lido. The drop off points in Geldeston are at the Rowancraft marina and the Locks Inn. The service operates from Easter to October.

Eating and Drinking: The Locks Inn has a large menu including main meals, baguettes and burgers. Friday night is curry special night. The Wherry Inn offers a wide range of options including main meals, signature burgers and lite-bites.

Other Services: Mandy’s Fabulous Pickles operates from Dunburgh Farm, (located on The Street not far from the Wherry Inn) selling a range of over 400 varieties of chutneys, mustards, marmalades and pickles including a prizewinning grapefruit and ginger marmalade.
